November is the month of Thanksgiving. What are you thankful for? How do you express thanks to God?

Genesis 1–2 describes God’s act of creating everything. Genesis 2:7, shows how humans came to life: “Then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.” The story gives the image of God leaning into and breathing into the first humans.

This was not a one-time act of giving life to a human. The breath of life, which we breathe in and out of our lungs, happens every single day and night. Job refers to his state of being this way, “as long as my breath is in me, the spirit of God is in my nostrils…” (Job 24:3). Job’s point isn’t simply about his life, but rather, that when he breathes, it isn’t simply air but God’s breath of life. Practically, what this means is that every moment of every day, each breath is an opportunity to be grateful for the gift of life.

Whether the things going on in your life are good or bad, God has given his breath of life that keeps you alive, and that, in and of itself, is something for which we should say thank you. One of the first thoughts you should have every day is to be grateful for the gift of waking up. Breathe in God’s goodness.

God is on the move!
