Wilbur Chapman said, “The clay is not attractive in itself, but when the hands of the potter touch it, and the thought of the potter is brought to bear upon it, and the plan of the potter is worked out in it and through it, then there is a real transformation.”

The first lesson we learn about the potter is the…

 1. The Potter      .

A potter fashions his clay with a clear goal in mind. He has designs for it. He wants his pottery to be useful and beautiful, to have meaning and purpose.

Both Isaiah and Zechariah, in the Old Testament, join with Jeremiah in presenting this picture of the potter and the clay.

The second lesson we learn about the potter is…

2. The Potter   Not   by  .

The Potter will not coerce or force us to cooperate with his plans.

Instead of following God’s architectural designs for them, the people were choosing to reject the potter’s plans. They wanted to enjoy God’s blessings while ignoring God’s directions or laws.
