Moving forward through time, many years from the exodus, Israel has been struggling with national instability through a period known as the time of the judges.

This promise to Israel and the covenant with David becomes a spiritual anchor for a weary people and a key part of the meta-narrative of Scripture.

Vernon McGee wrote in Thru the Bible saying, “God’s covenant with David makes this one of the great chapters of the Bible.”

The meta-narrative is a story of…

  1. A   through  .

In 2 Samuel 7, the prophet Nathan describes God’s covenant with David, saying, “Moreover, the LORD declares to you that the LORD will make you a house.”

The psalmist wrote, “You have said, ‘I have made a covenant with my chosen one; I have sworn to David my servant: I will establish your offspring forever and build your throne for all generations.’” (Psalm 89:3–4).

The everlasting nature of the covenant with David was brought out, not in the pages of ancient history but in the expectation of a Messiah who would be born of David’s descendants. Matthew and Luke both pointed to Jesus’ Davidic descent (Mt 1:1; Lk 3:31).
