The book of common prayers tells us that The Apostles’ Creed, the oldest known Christian creed, states, “He [Jesus] was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.”

Isaiah highlights and Matthew reminds his readers of God’s power and God’s loving promise.

The virgin birth is the loving promise that He will…

    1.   Be    .

Although the term incarnation does not appear in the Bible, Christian tradition has long held that Jesus is God incarnate: the second person of the Trinity descended from heaven who became human.

Isaiah’s prophecy of hope was given in a time of hopelessness and rebellion, a time where those leading God’s people were not holy.

    2. You Can    .

As God’s children we are called to accept and believe his Word, his promises, as true, even when they seem to be ridiculous or counterintuitive.

The Word of God comes to us, and it asks us to become like little children and to trust in our heavenly Father and believe in his promises the same way Mary did.
