According to Craig Blomberg, “The Sermon on the Mount likely represents a summary of Jesus’s other sermons.”

Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who wrote the classic book, The Cost of Discipleship, says, “With each beatitude the gulf is widened between the disciples and the people, their call to come forth from the people becomes increasingly manifest.”

Meekness is not something we like to associate with or be viewed as. We want people to know we are Americans, strong, capable, and rugged.

Meekness is quite compatible with great strength and ability as humans measure strength, but whatever strength or weakness the meek person has is accompanied by humility and a genuine dependence on God.

The cost of discipleship is learning that meekness is a way of life; when one is meek, then they are living a life of trust and patience.

A cultural proverb states that one should “speak softly and carry a big stick.” The cost of discipleship, learning and living a life that sets one apart from the world does not require a big stick, it requires a heavy dose of meekness.
