The Encyclopedia Britannica tells us “Maundy Thursday in Latin means ‘a new commandment I give to you’ from John 13:34.”

It was on Maundy Thursday that Jesus instituted the ordinance of Communion and also served his disciples by washing the feet of everyone in the room—including Judas Iscariot (John 13:2–10).

1.  A     for All

Jesus said in John 6:53-56, “Truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life in yourselves. The one who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day…The one who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him.”

Jesus is our source of life and feasting on him produces life.

2.  A     for All

The NIV Application Commentary says, “Nothing so astonishes a fractured world as a community in which radical, faithful, genuine love is shared among its members.”

Remembering the meal on Maundy Thursday leads us to rejoice in the Messiah on Easter Sunday.
